KY-536 (Mt. Zion Road) Project

The expansion and relocation of KY-536 (Mt. Zion Road) from I-75 to Old Union Road is in the proposed Kentucky Six Year Road Plan (2012 - 2018). The latest cost estimate for the project is about $59 million.

Construction of the new Mt. Zion Road will begin shortly based upon a recent $26.1 million bid submittal. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the City of Union have also completed an agreement for design features such as street lights, street signs, landscaping, and road maintenance. Below are some specific details:

KEY PROJECT COMPONENTS:

Widen KY-536 from Union to I-75
- 2,000 feet west of Old Union Rd (Hathaway Rd) - 2 lanes
- From Old Union Rd to US 42 - 3 lanes
- From US 42 to I-75 - 5 lanes
KY-536 widening project to be coordinated with KY-536 Interchange Improvement Project

KEY DESIGN ELEMENTS:

Speed Limits: 35 MPH / 45 MPH
Lane Widths: 11 feet (Middle lane - 13 feet)
10 foot multi-use path on both sides of KY-536 until the roundabout area - 10 foot sidewalk along curb
Storm sewers and detention basins
Two Roundabouts - Old Union Rd and Brillance Ave (after it is extended south)
Landscaped medians in some areas

Design - $3,161,220 (2001)
Right of Way - $20,850,000 (2012 - 2014) additional funds available
- 172 total Parcels and 15 total Re-locations
Utilities - $4,060,000 (Utility relocation underway)
Construction - $30,630,000 (2017 - authorized)
